Chris Boney was born on May 31, 1959 in Burgaw, NC. He is the youngest of five, and his family encouraged him to play music because they recognized he has a musical gift. His groove oriented bass playing decorates any rhythm section with flavorful funk and "in the pocket" accuracy. His influences include Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire, and other 70’s Funk and Soul bands.
Chris started his first band in high school called "Silk." Eventually he founded the Wilmington, NC-based Funk & R&B band Swing Shift (now disbanded), which proved to be a mainstay in many of Wilmington’s dance clubs. Currently he plays with Carl Newton and the Fifth Avenue Band, a popular Wilmington-based R&B, oldies and funk band.
The highlight of his career is when he played bass for the legendary James Brown Band at a wedding in Columbia, S.C. He also performs and tours with El Jaye Johnson and David Collins and has traveled up and down the East Coast with their recent "On The EDJE…" tour. He joins them again for a stop in Raleigh, NC, at NCSU’s Stewart Theatre on August 25, 2007, on the current Music In The Night concert series.
