MUSIC IN THE NIGHT - THE STORY!
On February 3, 2007, EDJE RECORDS' began its very own Music In The Night Concert Series. The first show debuted in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Pease Auditorium on the Campus of Central Peidmont Community College. It may have been a cold February evening in the Queen City, but the music was hot inside on stage. El Jaye, Tim and David, were joined by the fast hands of percussionist Michael Hanson and the funky sax sounds of one of James Brown's own, funky LeRoy Harper. Joined by the supporting vocals of Amanda Jones and Melissa Richardson, it was truly a night to remember. Show highlights included David Collins' show-stopping rendition of the Sam Cooke classic "Change is Gonna Come," Tim Shuford's stunning version of B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone," and El Jaye Johnson's always anticipated, electrifying version of Prince's "Purple Rain."
Music In The Night Concert Series took to the road again and landed in the ATL (Atlanta, GA in case you didn't know). The date was April 29, 2007, and this time El Jaye, David, Tim and the Port City All-Stars took to the stage at the Clayton County Schools Performing Arts Center in Jonesboro, GA. The state-of-the-art facility was host to pure musical history. Warming up the stage with was Mark "The Emcee" Chamalian, which was followed by David's debut of Frankie Beverly and Maze's "Before I Let Go." The audience rose to their feet as David and Tim performed an awesome, back-to-back medley of James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," and "I Feel Good," featuring the fancy footwork of Atlanta's own "Little J.B's." The opening set ended with El's Jaye's own smooth jazz anthem, "El's Theme," which featured the drum and percussion mastery of Tony Mallard and Michael Hanson. The rhythm section was polished off by 17-year-old bass phenomenom Taylor Lee, and an Atlanta staple, Nick Saindon, on keyboards. And leading the way on sax was funky LeRoy Harper.
The final destination was Raleigh, North Carolina, inside the beautiful Stewart Theatre on the campus of North Carolina State University. The August 25, 2007 event again featured the smooth vocals of former Raleigh resident DAVID COLLINS, the bluesy, husky voice of Charlotte, NC's TIM SHUFORD, and the fluid fingers, charming vocals, and vibrant footwork of Musician Extradorinaire EL JAYE JOHNSON. They were joined by an all-star cast of the hottest musicians on the East Coast, namely, the PORT CITY ALL-STARS. Drummer TONY MALLARD (Sonya's Kitchen, Craig Woolard Band), Bassist CHRIS BONEY (Carl Newton & The Fifth Avenue Band, Swing Shift), Keyboardist KEVIN KOLB (Kevin Kolb Trio), Saxophonist BENNY HILL (Benny Hill Quartet, Soul Power Posse), and Percussionist MIKE HANSON (Pamoja!, Ying-Yang!, Captain Cook and the Coconuts) along with vocalists AMANDA JONES and MELISSA RICHARDSON, dazzled the audience with the the third tour stop of the musical journey EDJE RECORDS calls Music In The Night! Mark "THE EMCEE" Chamalian called to order an evening that is still lingering in the ears of the attendees. The show featured a special shoutout to the late R&B legend Marvin Gaye, with David performing a smooth version of "What's Going On" followed by a stunning duet "You're All I Need to Get By" by David Collins and Amanda Jones. Amanda performed a sweet version of Beyonce's "Listen" from the DreamGirls Soundtrack. And David moved the crowd with "A Song For You" accompanied by Kevin Kolb on piano. The show was topped off with the debut performance of El Jaye Johnson's new single "New System of Things" (click here for sample). Free copies were given away to the first few attendees.
